TIPS ~ Storing Sterling Silver Jewelry

Storing your sterling silver in the open air and humidity for extended periods of time can cause it to tarnish quickly. Tarnish first appears as a golden hue on your sterling silver then quickly turns to black. This is a normal process that is caused by oxidization and moisture from air and believe it or not sunshine. To keep tarnish to a minimum it is advised that you store your jewelry pieces when not wearing them.

To reduce tarnish and keep your pieces tarnish free for months at a time, it is recommended that you keep your sterling silver jewelry in an air-tight protective bag made of tarnish proof cloth or you can use a plastic zip lock bag. Be warned that some plastic contains sulfur compounds which can cause your jewelry to tarnish faster or stain. Never use polyvinyl plastic bags. We store and ship our jewelry in tiny zip-lock bags that are perfect for this. I have found zip-lock bags work well for storing your sterling silver jewelry in and most jewelers store their sterling silver jewelry this way as well.

Sterling silver, stored properly, can be worn often and with minimal cleaning required, making it very easy to care for and lots of fun to wear.

Although your jewelry is scratch resistant it isn't scratch proof, so we recommend that you store your jewelry so that it isn't rubbing up against other articles, like in a loose drawer or jewelry box. Also, when storing remember that exposing it to air promotes tarnishing, so use the zip lock bags to protect from scratches and tarnish.

Avoid storing your sterling silver jewelry directly on wood surfaces, because wood usually contains acids that can mar the finish. Oak seems to be the worst for this. Also, avoid storing your sterling silver with other metals, like pennies, and rubber, these too cause tarnish and damage.

TIPS ~ Taking Care Sterling Silver Jewelry

Treat your sterling silver well care... and
it will reward you with a long life and lustrous look!

I've received a lot of question regarding taking care sterling silver jewelry. Here I want to share some of my best knowledge of it. Sterling silver, like other precious metal, can oxidize with time but it is easy to care for. With proper care, sterling silver jewelry will last for generations. Keeping sterling silver tarnish free and sparkling is really pretty easy. So don't be afraid to cover yourself in sterling silver.

Taking care of your sterling silver jewelry on a day-to-day basis:

  • Your sterling silver jewelry is meant to be worn! Wear your sterling silver jewelry on a regular basis, your body oils will slow down the tarnishing process. I touch my jewelry a lot, I know it sounds funny, but I don't have to clean them very often at all and when I do, I use a cleaning and polishing cloth. Just takes a few minutes!

  • Make your jewelry the last thing you put on in the morning, and the first thing you take off at night. Avoid strong chemicals, hairspray, makeup, lotion, etc. and if you plan to play rough, you might want to put it up.

  • Always remove your jewelry before cleaning house, washing dishes, swimming and taking a shower. Product that contains bleach, ammonia, alcohol, fingernail polish removers (that contains acetone and turpentine) can cause tarnish and dull or even pit the surface of your gemstone.

  • Always remove your jewelry before sleeping. Movement during sleep can cause stress.

  • Wipe your jewelry clean with a soft cloth before returning it to storage to remove any body oils and dirt. Do not rub with tissue paper or paper towels, it can cause scratches because of the fibers in these products.

  • Store your jewelry in a cool, dry place. Store them individually in the zip-lock bag provided will slow tarnishing and prevent scratching by other pieces in your jewelry box. See instruction on storing below for further detail information.

  • Keep your jewelry clean. It is much easier to remove tarnish and dirt when it is minimal. When your jewelry needs to be cleaned follow the recommend cleaning methods below.

Getting Tired of Winter

As per my calendar, first day of spring is officially tomorrow. But I still see a lot of snow 'mountains' on the streets everywhere. We got a lot of snow storms this year. I usually wondered around during snow storm, played with my camera to hopefully catch a lot of beautiful pictures. I share few of some pictures I took, it's in the neighborhood where I live. Look at the branches that were covered by snow, weren't they beautiful. And I guess I wasn't the only one who walked around and took pictures during snow fall.

I honestly love snow fall, I always find a magic moment in there that's hard to describe but I feel it. But somehow, I am getting tired of this winter and winter blues are all over me. Don't get me wrong, I love snow and winter but when it gets too loooooooong, I am tired of it. I cannot wait for spring to come, hopefully it's coming soon as Willy had been out a few weeks ago.
